Record Shops and Radio - 1940s-1960s

Here's an article from Houston History Magazine.  The Jive Hive was before my time but anyone who was around in the 60s through the 90s will remember The Record Rack on Shepherd at Alabama.

The article includes lots of quotes from Paul Berlin, who had a record store of his own, on the relation between record shops and radio.

For those interested in more recent history, here's an article from the Press in 2002 about the end of the Record Rack.

A Trove of 70s Memorabilia

Here is an extensive collection of material relating to the cultural situation in Houston during the 1970s consisting mostly ads from counter culture publications.

The material was originally posted on HAIF's Historic Houston forum but was moved to Picasa.  The original post spawned a discussion which can be found here with additional material of interest.

Although this is not really about radio it does illustrate some of the culture of the day which influenced the programming of numerous stations.  This will appear as a link on the sidebar under History Links.

Liberty Hall

Liberty Hall was a short-lived but very popular music venue in the 1970s in Houston, located about where Toyota Center is now. It hosted blues and rock acts and outlaw country. J.R. Gonzales' Bayou City History Blog in the Chronicle has done a post about an appearance by Waylon Jennings there in 1975 with a few great pictures and reader comments.

The article references another post about Liberty Hall last year in the Houston Press.

And here is a lengthy discussion thread from several years ago on HAIF.

Elvis in Houston - the Venues, the DJs

James V. Roy is a researcher who has put together a website devoted to Scotty Moore, the legendary guitarist and first personal manager of Elvis Presley. His very comprehensive article on Elvis' early appearances in Houston, before he became a national star, is a very fascinating account of the venues Elvis played at as well as mentioning many of the DJs and radio stations that were very involved in live music back then and makes very good reading related to this blog.

Glad Music Co. - Daily's

While responding to a Query about Biff Collie I came across this site which will be of interest to many long time Houstonians.
